The present watch is a very rare example of a ‘Quraysh Hawk dial' also known as “The Desert Eagle dialâ€. It represents the United Arab Emirates coat of arms and each dial is painted by hand in polychrome enamel This personalising of Rolex dials was most unusual, the rulers of the UAE and the Oman persuaded Rolex to have a limited number of their watches personalised at the beginning of the 1970's. The United Arab Emirates commissioned certain Rolex dials to be painted with the country's Hawk crest, whilst the Oman Royal Family commissioned their to be painted with the Khanjar dagger with crossed swords. These watches were given as gifts by members of the Royal family and senior government officials to foreign diplomats, dignitaries and persons who had served their country – often in a military capacity. This particular watch was given to a British surgeon who had carried out a complicated operation on the wife of a senior UAE government minister in a private hospital in London. |
